Confusing Words

Confusing Words

In this world, people use what we call words. Words are confusing for me. Just because I have ideas or feelings does not mean that I will ever be able to share them with people because it’s nearly impossible for any two people to agree on the definition of a word.

I will talk about 3 words that aren’t really defined well.

God

When someone says the word “God”, it means different things to different people. There are many so called gods from other religions. In their case, they may ask which god I am referring to. A lot of people confuse God with santa clause. “He sees you when you’re sleeping He knows when you’re awake He knows if you’ve been bad or good So be good for goodness sake”.

My own reaction to hearing the word God has changed over time since I now see from the Bible and experience in life that God isn’t omnipotent, omniscient, or omnipresent. What really changed my opinion was the problem of suffering. Someone I once trusted told me that God allows our suffering to test us to see if we will be obedient to him. The two obvious problems with that is that since I was taught that God knew everything(omniscient). Therefore he has no need to test us. Second, little children who are raped or murdered before they have even heard of God can’t be tested for obedience to a God they don’t know. Also, you must first be commanded to do something before you can obey!

Food

When people talk about food, they are usually thinking very different things. Some people might think that a burger and fries at McDonalds or Burger King is what they would call food. It may be for them, but I can’t eat such things. I eat mostly Marie Calendar meals, Omelettes from HyVee, Burritos, peanut butter sandwiches, and pumpkin or chicken pot pies. The word food is such a general term that it in no way is useful on a shopping list.

Sexy

I really have no idea what sexy is. So many things I can remember being called sexy. People talk about men, women, clothes, and even cars as sexy. It looks like someone took the word “sex” and thought that adding a “y” at the end of it would be a cool thing to do. I suppose that this is just like making the words “Gody” and “Foody”. Since even the word sex has no real definition these days, the word sexy is also complete nonsense.

I suppose that people might call me “Gody” because I talk about God. They could definitely call me “foody” because I eat food. But whatever you do, don’t call me “sexy”.

A world of fake love

A world of fake love

As I was analyzing the problem of evil in the world as I usually am. I had a strange thought. Often I wish God would just set the world straight and fix all the problems people have caused, punish the ones responsible, and make the world a much safer place.

However, I realized something, suppose that God did rule the world constantly and every time someone tried to lie, kill, rape, steal, or anything like that, he instantly stopped the action from happening.

What we would have is a world full of people who we thought loved us and were our friends. The truth would be that the only reason they don’t push us off a cliff is because God wasn’t allowing them to. We would be living a lie. I’m sure that people would probably still know in their hearts that something was wrong, but they wouldn’t know exactly why.

Also, wouldn’t that make God pretty much the same as the very people that many Americans despise in the US Government? People don’t like being told what they can do or not. Some examples are the silly laws that the New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg makes. Two links are below.

The point is that we already have other humans controlling our lives, we should be greatful that God doesn’t force us to behave the way he wants.

So basically, I’ve been criticizing God for not doing what I think he should, and yet, if he did, I’d be mad for him controlling me. God can’t win. It must be a hard job being God.

Gay Marriage

Gay Marriage

I don’t claim to be an expert on the whole concept of gay marriage. I simply read the newspapers sometimes and I find that for some odd reason one of the top political issues is the legality of gay marriage.

I’m usually silent on this subject. In all seriousness, it doesn’t affect me personally, and I think that there are a lot of other problems in America such as abortion, the economy, and global warming which are far more damaging to all life on earth.

That being said, I do have a few things to say.

What ever happened to people being friends? I’m not talking about “friends” on facebook. I mean people that I can talk to about serious problems. Not just people who might talk to me once in a while if I go to their church. I’ve had enough of that. If people can’t manage basic friendship then I don’t see how any kind of “marriage” is going to be any better. People have forgotten what it means to emotionally connect with other people in a non sexual way. I have almost no social interaction with anyone, but I think it would help if people might turn off their cell phones once in a while in case I ever get the nerve to talk to them.

Why must people be treated badly based on skin color, gender, height, weight, age, sexual orientation or anything else that they have very little to no power to change.

When did the idea start that God can forgive murder, lying, stealing, or adultery, and yet somehow “God hates fags”?
I have another post about the group that said that

People in this world are messed up enough without being judged by those who don’t understand them. Only God really knows what is inside a person and he alone will judge us by the same standards we judge others as Jesus said in Matthew 7.

Matthew 7:1 “Do not judge so that you will not be judged. 7:2 For by the standard you judge you will be judged, and the measure you use will be the measure you receive. 7:3 Why do you see the speck in your brother’s eye, but fail to see the beam of wood in your own? 7:4 Or how can you say to your brother, ‘Let me remove the speck from your eye,’ while there is a beam in your own? 7:5 You hypocrite! First remove the beam from your own eye, and then you can see clearly to remove the speck from your brother’s eye.

New Machines

New Machines

Lately I’ve been reading a lot online and talked to an employee at walmart about all these new fancy things such as iphones, ipods, ipads, kindles, and nooks. It was sad to admit that I know nothing about these things. I feel old when I can’t keep up with all these new machines. I grew up in the 80s and 90s before these things were around.

I’m rather impressed with the Amazon Kindle from what I’ve learned. My mom and I have been talking about getting her something like that. She can read a book as fast as I can drink a can of pepsi. I used to think that ebooks were something only for those those people who want to save the trees by reducing the need for paper. But recently I feel like I’m being converted the cult of ebooks. I live with my mom in a tiny apartment. You can not imagine how many books she has in here.

I can see the advantage of having books all inside a tiny machine so that they don’t collect dust and she can read what she wants without searching the whole house to find it. Also, the cost of an ebook is significantly lower and sometimes even free if it’s in the public domain. There would be no waiting for it to arrive in the mail. It sounds like it may be a good mother’s day gift.

Besides saving the trees and space in here, it would also provide my mom unlimited entertainment. She won’t even notice whether I’m home or at HyVee.

Of course, the downside is not all books are available as ebooks, not yet anyway. I can see a world coming in which nobody reads real books anymore. It’s rather terrifying, but not as terrifying as what’s in my mom’s closet upstairs.
